SOFT LAUNCHING MY NEW OFFICE

Yesterday was a very busy day for us in PRSB. After move to the new office kat Kompleks Asia City baru kelmarin perasmian bangunan pejabat baru.

New Earring Stand

NINJA ASSASSIN

Hari ini je 3 summary movie i buat...hehehehe. Best gila ceritanya...

Not even the artfully laconic subtlety of the title can prepare you for the deft mastery, narrative virtuosity and aching beauty of this prescient modern parable – a parable which adroitly traverses three of the most pressing anxieties of the late Naughties neo-imperial world: escalating paranoia counter-posed with unbridled personal anonymity, the irreversible decay of the communicability of the human soul, and the fading of tradition caught squarely amid the age-old tensions of the rural/urban binary. Not.

To do true justice to this film, I feel it necessary to begin with a comparable amount of nonsense. Now I try to live life by the sturdy aphorism “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” and I tried, really tried to in this case, but this film really isn’t going to budge any further from the simple premise of ninjas that are assassins.

The film centres around one such ninja assassin, Raizo, played by Korean pop sensation, Rain. Raizo, like so many other Japanese children, apparently, was abducted at early infancy by a shady ninja-trainer, who proceeds to force his newly acquired children to beat one another with sticks in a hilltop commune, whilst living by a bunch of arbitrary maxims that really don’t mean anything at all, such as ‘blood begets revenge’ and ‘pain fulfils hurt’. Crosscut with the hackneyed Bildungsroman tale of Raizo emerging as the most promising ninja assassin, we follow Mika, a young, ‘inquisitive, yet sexy’ researcher for a secret service based in Berlin. What this ’secret service’ is supposed to be, or which government it represents, doesn’t even matter because it seems pretty obvious that the filmmakers themselves haven’t invested much time or effort in bolstering the film with any gleam of authenticity whatsoever. Mika works under Agent Maslow, played, bizarrely, by the disconcertingly small-nosed bloke from Coupling. Even the actors seem quite aware of how pretend the world in which they inhabit feels. Mr, Coupling at one point casually orders to his team to have the ‘International Mega Attack Stealth Squad mobilized in five minutes’ or something to that effect.

Anyway, it transpires that because Mika is delving a little too deeply into this world of ninja assassins that she pisses all the ninja assassins off sufficiently to make them want to come and assassinate her. Fair enough, really. Raizo, who in spite of all his assassinating and whatnot, is also a ‘good guy’ with ‘morals’, one of which includes saving sexy shady secret service researchers. Sandwiched in between all of this, by the way, is a heck of a lot of decapitating, slicing, incising, stabbing and general assassinating. This did quench that part of me which enjoys the poetry of meaningless, stylised, gymnastic filmic violence and a lot of it, to the film’s credit, is very impressive; I still marvel at how any of it is actually filmed. Perhaps the fact that the Wachowski brothers produced the film goes some way to explaining this, but what staggered me more is how it could be inset into such a flimsily scripted, sham blockbuster vehicle. Then I realised it was directed by James McTeigue, who also directed V for Vendetta.

Essentially, Ninja Assassin is couched utterly in the ridiculous. The centre-piece – those eponymous ninja assassins themselves – are my
favourite element, and uphold the prevailing tone of nonsense that sustains the length of the film. Irrespective of preconceptions younmight have had about ninjas as silent, stealthy creatures of the night, when hunting in packs, they apparently all whisper a disorientating and threatening chorus of ninja and assassin related buzzwords such as ‘kill’, ’silence’, ‘blood’, ’slice’ and ‘honour’. In a final showdown sequence between Raizo and the ninja-trainer, we learn that ninja assassins can heal their wounds a la Wolverine and also turn invisible. Also, ninja assassins have no sense of humour whatsoever.

Whatsoever.

DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE MORGAN? MOVIE

Wayang ini Sue tengok masa sambut new year 2010 bersama 3 of my cousin also at 1B.

Length:
103 min
Rated: PG-13
Distributor: Columbia Pictures
Release Date: 2009-12-18

Starring: Sarah Jessica Parker, Hugh Grant, Sam Elliott, Rob Yang, Mary Steenburgen, Elisabeth Moss

Directed by Marc Lawrence
Produced by Liz Glotzer, Martin Shafer, Melissa Wells
Written by Marc Lawrence

You like to assume that no one sets out to make a mediocre movie, but with Did You Hear About The Morgans?, its utter blandness and predictably seem to be precisely the effect the filmmakers were going for. You can anticipate every beat, every joke and Hugh Grant shrug, every time Sarah Jessica Parker will get all shrill and every time she'll gaze at him like Carrie Bradshaw at a pair of Manolos. In other words, you get exactly what you pay for. It's hard to imagine why you'd want to pay to be talked down to and coddled like a baby, but director Marc Lawrence (Music and Lyrics, Two Weeks Notice) sure won't go broke offering you the chance.

Living the kind of posh, wealthy lives that Parker spent years fetishizing on Sex and the City, Meryl and Paul Morgan are in the process of a divorce but still agree to have a romantic dinner-- Paul cheated, you see, and wants to win Meryl back, which you need to know in case you somehow haven't already figured out how this ends. After dinner Meryl and Paul accidentally witness a murder, and before she can figure out that a sparkly dress won't be needed in the Witness Protection Program, Meryl and Paul are shipped off to Ray, Wyoming, where they'll bunk with salt-of-the-earth types Clay and Emma Wheeler (Sam Elliott and Mary Steenburgen, of course) until either the killer or more suitable arrangements can be found.

There are jokes about running away from bears and how cheap sweaters can be at Costco and an actually funny line about Steenburgen resembling Sarah Palin, but then there's also Paul and Meryl's inexorable return to one another's arms, which will get ruined just before the third-act finale that sends us all home. Even with the killer tailing them thanks to the help of their unwitting assistants (Elisabeth Moss, who really deserves better, and Jesse Liebman), there's absolutely no suspense, because Did You Hear About The Morgans? telegraphs from the very beginning that this is the kind of movie in which nothing bad can happen to anyone. Even when Wilford Brimley shows up as an ancient, cranky local, you know he's safe-- this movie can't take the time for real emotion amid its comedic setpieces and squabbles between Paul and Meryl.

There are enough laughs scattered throughout to keep the experience from ever being miserable-- Parker remains a gifted physical comedienne, and Grant runs through his entire career's worth of sarcastic one-liners in this one film. There's zero chemistry between the two of them, but they spend so much time learning to ride horses and shoot guns and wear cowboy hats that it doesn't really matter. The film at least goes easy on down-home wisdom-- Paul and Meryl may learn to love each other again out in the wilderness, but they are New Yorkers to the bone.

Opening against Avatar with the clear intention of bringing in women turned off by the blue cat people, the greatest crime of Did You Hear About The Morgans? is that it gives unadventurous audiences an excuse to avoid the truly remarkable film opening against it. Catch it on DVD in a few months, though, and I won't hold it against you. There are only so many good romantic comedies in the world, and you can do worse than this one, mediocre to its core.

NEW MOON MOVIE

This movie Sue tengok dalam bulan December last year.

Cast: Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner
Writer: Based on author Stephenie Meyer’s ‘Twilight series’, Melissa Rosenberg (Screenwriter)
Direction: Chris Weitz
Genre: Romance/ Fantasy/ Thriller
Rating: /photo.cms?msid=5323747

‘New Moon’, the second instalment of the Twilight series, is darker not solely for its complex story line but also because of the minimal presence of ‘white-skinned’ vampire Edward Cullen in it. All you Robert Pattinson fans out there, New Moon, it seems, will remain one of the weakest links of Meyer’s Twilight series for this very reason, although Chris Weitz makes up for this drawback with his brilliant direction.

If Twilight was a bright and beautiful build-up of an unconventional romance between a human Bella and vampire Edward Cullen, New Moon is a dark and dangerous repercussion of that romance. Naturally, it has heart-ache and longing which makes it a bitter, darker sequel of Twilight.

The film begins with Edward (Robert Pattinson) breaking-up with Bella (Kristen Stewart) fearing he’s become a danger to her. He decides to leave Forks with his family and travels to Italy to see the Volturi, the powerful vampire ruling class, expecting them to finish him once and for all. Meanwhile, Bella is left heart-broken and shattered. After a self-imposed house arrest for months, she finally finds solace in her childhood friend Jacob (Taylor Lautner). Jacob’s a complete contrast of Edward. He is warm and promises to be with Bella come what may. Bella starts getting fonder of Jacob but will she be able to get over Edward?

If Twilight was all about the strengths of vampires, New Moon is about their weaknesses. The werewolves too come to power in this instalment. Bella delves deeper into the vampire world than before. Compare the two and New Moon pales in comparison to Twilight as far as the story is concerned but it scores over its prequel in the direction department. After a slow build-up, Twilight jumped to the climax which seemed absurd and that doesn’t happen in New Moon. Director Chris Weitz steadily keeps building the suspense without losing out on the pace.

Though ‘New Moon’ drags in parts, its filmmaker ensures that you keep watching... be it through the film’s mysterious background score which leaves you in a trance or its captivating cinematography. The action and special effects too make an impact. He also very smartly makes Edward make a ghostly appearance every now and then for you cannot afford to not have an Edward Cullen in a Twilight saga movie!

New Moon also works for its performances. Robert Pattinson proves yet again that he is not just another good looking heartthrob. He plays the intense and brooding Edward with utmost perfection, in spite of playing second fiddle to Taylor Lautner who is equally effective as Jacob. New Moon is Taylor Lautner’s chance to shine. Kristen Stewart too plays the damsel in distress well but her depressed character is the least interesting in the film. Dacota Fanning has a fleeting presence. Michael Sheen is terrific as the psychic vampire Aro.

If you are open to seeing a campus love story turn into a dark drama, you will like New Moon, else you could always wait for Eclipse...

SHERLOCK HOLMES MOVIE

Semalam I pergi menonton wayang bersama Adik n cousin saya di 1 Borneo.

Cast : Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law, Rachel McAdams
Direction: Guy Ritchie
Genre: Action/ Thriller
Rating: /photo.cms?msid=5421287
Guy Ritchie known for making modern Brit gangster films (‘Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’, ‘Snatch’, ‘RocknRolla’) now enters an unexplored territory. He attempts to revamp Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic literary character ‘Sherlock Holmes’ by giving it a modern twist. Result? Ritchie lets you be the detective for a change as you too are left hunting for ‘fun’ in the film which to a certain extent you do find all thanks to the crackling chemistry between Holmes (Robert Downey Jr) and Watson (Jude Law).

The film begins with the arrest of Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong (Body of Lies, impressive) who uses his mysterious dark powers to rule London. Holmes and Watson get back to business and together track down the culprit and get him arrested. Just when Holmes feels that he has solved the case, news of Blackwood getting back from the dead surfaces leading the famous detective and his sidekick to yet another mind-bending journey of solving a supernatural puzzle this time around. Complicating matters is Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams), Holmes’s ex-flame, who returns to London with hidden motives that adds to Holmes’ list of suspicions.

Ritchie’s adaptation portrays Holmes’ eccentricities as a genius perfectly but somehow also makes him look more of a street fighter than a detective. The huge number of stunts induced in the film makes it more of an action packed James Bond flick and less of a suspense thriller which it should ideally be. The stunts are shot superbly (watch out for the scene where Holmes envisages his stunts before he actually does it. The stunts are shown in slow motion and are cleverly shot) but its abundance and thus lack of relevance is what puts you off. Holmes is also shown spending more time in fist-fights than solving his cases.

Coming to the story, seeing Holmes solve a puzzle with his great mind is what you expect but what you get is meaningless conversations between the characters instead and then stunts in between when the director feels the pace of the film has slowed down.

The supernatural plot is predictable and thus disinteresting. Addition of Rachel McAdams as femme fatale Irene is another drawback as she doesn’t exude the sensuality her character demands. Rachel and Robert have zero chemistry!

Set in 19th century London, the film lacks the Victorian finesse that the era demands.

In spite of the odds, what does make Sherlock Holmes worth a watch is the chemistry between its lead actors. Ritchie gets his casting bang on. Robert Downey Jr as Sherlock and Jude Law as Dr Watson are superb. They keep bickering like a married couple throughout. When Watson decides to move out of their shared apartment and live with his fiancée Mary instead, you sense jealousy in Holmes’ eyes. If Holmes is a genius yet an eccentric brat, Watson is a protective partner who helps Holmes balance his life by making him look sane to the outside world. Robert and Jude both exude unspoken emotions for each other thus creating a subtle homo-erotic tension between their characters. Ritchie’s typical dark humour and witty one-liners work too.

Robert renders a befitting portrayal of Sherlock. He creates the aura that his legendary character demands. His Brit accent (inspite of being an American) is impressive. Jude Law is impeccable. He is charming, good looking, intelligent and vulnerable as Watson. Together the two are the best thing to have happened to this film and the sequels to follow.

We have read much better Sherlock Holmes stories than what we get to see. The film is a classic example of how good actors can help you like a strictly mediocre film.
